THe mission of Breast Friends of WNY is to ease the transition into parenthood through education and support. We accomplish this mission by taking a proactive approach with breastfeeding and creating a caring, open-minded environment for first-time, as well as veteran, parents by addressing their needs and concerns in an individualized manner.
Started by two moms who were fed up with bogus advice given to mothers regarding breastfeeding and child rearing, Sandy and Mary decided to take action.
We know the struggles faced by pregnant women and new mothers because we've been there! We have each faced different obstacles throughout our journeys and emerged as proud baby wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping mamas. We don't purport to be experts, nor do we have the audacity to proclaim to replace the need for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) or such wonderful groups as La Leche League; our intention is to complement these amazing resources. Our backgrounds in education (Sandy) and social work (Mary), paired with being mothers who struggled with a variety of issues early on, allow us to offer unique perspectives and a wealth of personal experience to help put you on the path to success with your little one.
We want to fight back against the injustice that is done to parents and babies by well-meaning individuals who undoubtedly offer their opinion, whether you want it or not. The idea that women should just "know" how to breastfeed and mother their babies is a farce. With conflicting information coming from all angles (from your pediatrician to your mother-in-law to your co-worker to the old lady in the grocery store), who's a gal to trust with her most precious possession? Yourself, that's who!!
Most breastfeeding education is offered to pregnant women or moms with newborns and we believe that the follow-up is lacking. Knowing how to breastfeed in theory is drastically different than actually doing it on your own, at home and without help. Pre-natal and Post-Partum support and one-on-one in-home visitation is available to our members to assist in breastfeeding for all interested Moms within a 20-mile-radius of Buffalo, NY. Webcam (e.g. Skype, Tango, Google +) consultation is also available upon request.
Individual support isn't limited to breastfeeding- we have knowledge and experience in a variety of activities- baby wearing, gentle parenting, swaddling, bottle feeding, car seat safety, and more. If we can't solve your issue, we can refer you to the best people and resources in our region to get your needs met!
Join Mary and Sandy as they teach you how to follow your gut with no-nonsense advice on how to handle all aspects of motherhood. See our Support Groups and Online Forum pages to learn more on how to get the individualized support you need!
